I think that's the key thing - with many of the early adopters, they are always wondering when the next best thing is. We are quick to jump in and use the 'new stuff' but then also just as quick to toss it aside looking for the next best thing - we get 'bored' quickly and want more and new... BUT, for the 'normal' user, the technology is great. And, when you think that front projection is 'bad', then you can go for the rear projection or the plasma overlay or the 600i, etc etc... you can add the airliner and change the classroom dynamic, you can add senteo and utilize integrated assessment tools, so for us 'gadget' junkies there are always new tools to add-on to a very solid base model. To go back to the car reference... think about the Ford Mustang - original versions were classic, the 80's version was garbage, and they are making their way back by going back now to the roots of the original idea... sometimes the complete overhaul ends up being the mistake - new and sexy isnt always better...

[...] Dave mentioned that London schools had spent £50 million on IWBs. Most research (Ofsted) has focussed on ICT impact on student attainment as measured by high stakes testing. In today’s political climate, it’s interesting that the push for back-to-basics type of curriculum could actually be supported by this technology, which as Tom Barrett pointed out a little while back isn’t that new anymore. Yet, here in Australia, it really is being seen as very new and I think I heard the word exciting more than once from various participants. No wonder Web 2.0 is unheard of - that’s the area I need to push into more, exploring where IWB and Web 2.0 intersect. [...]

[...] I’ve been meaning to link and comment on a post from Tom Barrett called Has the IWB past it’s sell by date? that touches on the technology that is still hailed in many Australian schools as the next big thing. It is seemingly hailed by many as the ultimate educational ICT tool as there aren’t too many other edtech tools around that command conferences solely dedicated to the one form of technology. How about about an iPod conference, anyone? [...]

The Entertaible (who named it?!!) certainly looks interesting... i am sure there is a lot of scope with that, particularly in early years.

Plasma screen rather than IWB would be beneficial - pupils always end up blocking the projection or making rabbit shadows in it! (or is that just the teachers?).

Some classic cars are timeless though - hence classic! Could the IWB be like that? Or could some teachers be like Bergerac and want the classic jag? (sorry for the analogies!)

Rich

By the way, I couldn't post any comments if i was logged in to learnerblogs or edublogs; had to clear cookies before i could post comments as it kept saying error due to no email filled in, although when you are logged in it doesn't offer email box! (PS longer than the comment?)!

Patience, young Skywalker! Things take time to embed. You're a pioneer, a trailblazer, Tom and as such will no doubt get frustrated when others haven't even heard of the things that you've moved on from.

What we need in education are specific educational technologists in every school, not willing volunteers who do the job on top of their ordinary teaching role. I'd certainly take that job... :-)
