Are you familiar with 6-degrees-of-separation? Well I got the skinny on how to use Notebooks on a Hosted domain. I was told that this should work for any of the apps that are "Graduates of Labs", but I've only tested it on Notebooks, so - caveat emptor...

Instead of trying to type out the details... I posted it at www.pencadercharter.org/google

Hi Ken
I have pulled my finger out and signed up for a domain today! Only just realised that the Apps for domain do not include Notebook. So we will need to figure a work around for that.

Tom,

"I don't have a domain" is a poor excuse. In fact it's right up there with my dog ate my homework! (if there are students reading this that excuse doesn't work in a computer class where you have to submit your work online... I tried it and failed miserably at getting my professor to believe it!)

I just checked www.priestsicprimaryschool.org is available! Purchase it for less than $10/US$ per year from GoDaddy.com if you enter danicaweb as the promo code you save a buck.

You need DNS of course... you can do that at GoDaddy, but I recommend www.zoneedit.com for you... Cost $0 until you reach some threshold that will take you a long time to hit, by then you'll be old hat and can do you own DNS somewhere else, maybe back at GoDaddy (truth is I don't know how to adequately manage DNS there so I won't be able to help you if you try to do it there...)

Apply to Google for Hosted Education Edition...

If you sequence things correctly...

 1) Sign up for Zoneedit and get the correct DNS names up front
 2) Buy the domain and give it the correct DNS immediately (this saves you 2 days of waiting for DNS propagation!)
 3) Apply for Hosted Gmail & Education Edition
 4) Your cooking with gas in a few days!

I can get it all going for you, but you'll have to contact me privately to discuss...

I wish you success!

Hi Doug - is this using the Education Apps Edition in which you need a domain name to get it all setup?

Tom,

I've signed up for 500 accounts for mrbelshaw.co.uk. So we have:

* start.mrbelshaw.co.uk - personalised home page (with content I specify - links, etc.) on the left-hand side
* calendar.mrbelshaw.co.uk - unsurprisingly, a calendar. Especially useful for my GCSE students (coursework deadlines, exams, etc.) but perhaps less so for students of the age you teach.
* mail.mrbelshaw.co.uk - perhaps the most useful one: a branded GMail account with the potential for Google Chat (if I allow it!)
* docs.mrbelshaw.co.uk - I've already used Google Docs & Spreadsheets with some of my classes, but having as part of this bundle ties everything toget
* pages.mrbelshaw.co.uk - my ICT students will be using this to create their websites. I'll be blogging using Wordpress MU with other students.

The future's looking bright for educators - let us know how you get on!
