Some interesting thoughts and ideas re. the Smart Table.
Our primary school is expecting delivery (at my instigation following BETT) of a table in the near future as part of the new school. Looking forward to gathering any initial thoughts, problems and ideas regarding usage of the Smart Table. I am particularly concerned with the 'Luddites' on the staff and their reluctance to embrace pocket calculators ergo potential barriers to effective Smart table use in the classroom.

While you and the others that build lessons and find resources around the SmartTable, it would be AWESOME if you all would start a group in diigo or delicious and start sharing and spreading the knowledge. I see this as a huge addition to the younger grades and in the science lab.

Hi there Tom, great post.

We are another pilot school, and the Smart Table is going to be waiting for us when we get back from the holidays. Whilst I too am excited about the device and its potential for enhancing teaching and learning I also believe that it's what you do with the technology that matters - "It's not about the TECH, it's about the TEACH..." (Thanks to David D Muir for that pearl of wisdom). To that end, I have concerns about the range of activities available for genuine multi-touch use with the table. Obviously, Notebooks and things will still work on the ST, but if it is to become more than a small, horizontal SmartBoard we really need to see software and applications that can be harnessed to allow us as teachers to create the rich learning activities that my gut is telling me can be presented using the Smart Table (or any other multitouch surface).

It is promising that the ethos behind the development of the Smart Table seems to be opensource-friendly. I am hopeful that, for instance, the 'pond' application I saw on the Durham videos might be able to be utilised on the Smart Table with a bit of tweaking. I also stumbled upon the NUI Group website http://www.nuigroup.com/ - that's the Natural User Interface - and am hopeful some of the stuff I see on there might help me to come up with a range of activities to add to what is already on the Table. The 2 concerns I have are:

1 - It will all be just to technologigally complicated for me, and I will not be able to really create the resources I would dearly love to.

2 - other teachers in my school will be far less inclined to go beyond what comes pre-packaged, and so will not see the full worth of the table. Course, that means my class might get more time to use it......

Despite the reservations though, I am still excited enough to bust a gut! Look forward to hearing and sharing more about the Tables once I get my dirty wee hands on it.....

It would be great if you could bring another device near and swipe (say) photos or text from it onto table (via Bluetooth?). be able then to organise, group work done away from touch surface.

how about some form of game/map exercise where you progress along route "collecting" items together - perhaps matching stuff with other group members - as you go. Control own avatar on map

Very Interesting. Looking forward to see how you manage to use it in your classroom. The table is in good hands
